Time Magazine
hit it just right in its headliner "Cannes In Canada" referring
to The Toronto International Film Festival. A survey in the Los
Angeles Times says Toronto is the number one festival in the world.
These accolades may generate skepticism about the wisdom of attending.
Nobody really aspires to death-by asphyxiation at a film
festival. Two things to say about that (contra Forrest Gump who
seemed ever only to have just one thing to say about anything):
The Toronto May press release is accurate in describing the festival
as "audience friendly", unlike Cannes. And secondly, even though
the Festival shouldn't be missed, just in case you have a job
from which you cannot rip yourself, or whatever, you can
participate in the Festival by joining us here at Cinternational!
We'll introduce you to some of the celebrity actors, directors,
and other significant persons across the sprawl. Please join us!
The following
reviews are of some of the Festival screenings of '97. The choices
for this season's Festival in September will be announced on this
site.
JUNK
MAIL by Pal Sletaune is a black comedy about love, money
that no one wants, cold canned spaghetti, karaoke, involuntary good
deeds, rutting and the joy of being comatose.

The
PLANET AFRICA programme has had its third season
at the Toronto International Film Festival. Programmer Cameron Bailey
states "It's a big planet. Worldwide, African cinema keeps growing.
We grow with it. Each year Planet Africa includes new directors
and new nations."
